A rate you have calculated instead of guessed

Many swim schools take the rate from the school down the street, add a euro, and hope it’s correct. That works until pool rental increases, an instructor wants more pay, or half the group drops out. In Amstelveen, the pool rental doubled and the swimming lessons for 400 children were threatened to stop because parents had to pay a mandatory membership fee of 175 euros for four weeks (NOS, February 2024). Such messages hit harder when no one has ever calculated what a lesson should cost.

Below you will see how, as a small swim school or independent instructor, you calculate your cost price per lesson, which rate model suits your offer, and how to communicate your rates clearly so parents understand what they get.

What a swimming lesson currently costs in the Netherlands

The median per lesson is €14.78 for 45 minutes

Zwembadvergelijker compared 547 providers and found a median of €14.78 for a group lesson of 45 minutes. The average is higher at €17.13 because a handful of expensive providers pull that number up. For a private lesson of 45 minutes, the median is €59.10. Those who only look at the average quickly think there is more to gain than is usual in practice.

Monthly amounts tell parents more than lesson prices

Parents calculate in months and diplomas, not in lesson hours. Four examples from practice: Zwembad De Kûpe in Buitenpost charges €50.70 per month for one lesson per week of 45 minutes and €89.90 for two lessons per week. Zwemschool van Tongeren charges €75.00 per month with a €20.00 registration fee. Zwemschool de Drijver charges €86.50 per month for small groups and €124.50 for private lessons. Same country, same diploma, a factor 2.5 difference.

Why the differences are so large

Four factors explain almost the entire difference: how many children are in a lane, how long the lesson lasts, what the pool rental costs, and whether the instructor is employed or self-employed. A lesson with twelve children in a target group pool is economically very different from five children with their own instructor. To compare, calculate back to a price per 45 minutes of lesson time and note the group size alongside.

Your cost price: four items that determine your rate

1. Pool water is your biggest cost item

Municipalities publish their pool rates per hour, and the range is large. For example, one lane of 25 meters in Utrecht in 2026 costs €32.20 per hour for a commercial organization, versus €20.81 for an association. A target group pool costs €80.63 per hour and a 50-meter competition pool €309.07 (municipality of Utrecht, sports location prices 2026).

If you rent one lane of 25 meters for three hours per week, that is €96.60 per week, nearly €3,900 per year, before anyone is in the water. How your school is classified differs per municipality: an association with a federation membership pays a different rate than a commercial swim school.

2. The instructor: wages plus everything around it

The statutory minimum hourly wage depends on the age of your instructor (Dutch government, minimum wage amounts 2026).

On top of that come holiday pay and social premiums, plus the hours no one sees: preparation, handover, setting up materials, and calling parents about a missed lesson. The gross wage is therefore not your hourly rate. Ask your accountant for your actual costs per hour.

3. Diploma, materials, and insurance

Diplomas and certificates, flotation aids, a tablet or laptop, liability insurance, and administration. Per child, it’s a few euros, and precisely for that reason it disappears from your mind if you don’t include it.

4. Calculation example: one lane, eight children, 45 minutes

List the items for one lesson of 45 minutes, with eight children in one lane of 25 meters. The pool rental is the Utrecht rate for a commercial organization, and the instructor is calculated at €19.00 per hour including holiday pay and premiums.

Against a median rate of €14.78 per child, you keep €7.76 per child with a full group: €62 per lesson, about €248 per month with four lessons. If one child drops out, the same pool rental is spread over seven children. The margin then drops to €47 per lesson, almost €60 less per month. Occupancy earns you more than asking one euro extra, and that is exactly why an empty seat is more expensive than it seems.

These amounts are a calculation example with public rates from Utrecht. Your pool rental, wages, and group size differ, so calculate your own figures with your administration and accountant. The figures here show the method, not what you should charge.

Which rate model suits your swim school?

Pay per lesson: flexible, but your income fluctuates

The advantage is fair: parents who miss a lesson do not pay for it. The disadvantage is that your income fluctuates with holidays, illness, and weather, and you have to collect payment for every lesson again. For a starting instructor with one group, this is the simplest route. Once you have multiple groups, it becomes a hassle.

Monthly subscription: fixed amount, fixed seat in the group

This is what most swim schools do: a fixed amount per month for one or two lessons per week. The spot in the group belongs to the subscription, even if a child misses a lesson. You already know in January approximately what will come in March, and parents know what to expect. Include in your terms what you do in case of long-term illness or injury.

Package per diploma: one amount, one promise

Some schools sell a package of forty lessons or an A-trajectory. Parents then hear at once what they are starting, and you receive your money earlier. The risk lies with you: if a child needs more lessons than the package, those lessons come from your margin. So calculate how often a child on average needs longer than the package.

Registration fee and diploma costs: name them separately

Registration fees from €20.00 to €40.00 and diploma costs around €30.00 are common everywhere. List them separately in your rate overview instead of hiding them in your monthly amount. Parents who later see an unexpected bill will call, costing you more time than it yields.

How to keep swimming lessons accessible without shortchanging yourself

Discount for the second and third child

A discount for a brother or sister fills groups without lowering your main price. Calculate what it costs you: in the example above, your margin is €7.76 per child per lesson, so a 10 percent discount costs you €1.48 and leaves €6.28. That is still profit as long as that seat would otherwise have remained empty.

Youth Fund Sport & Culture and municipal schemes

Not every family can spare €75 per month. The Youth Fund Sport & Culture reimburses lesson fees for children from families with insufficient funds, and applications go through an intermediary. Pools and swim schools register with the fund in their region (Youth Fund Sport & Culture, becoming an intermediary). In the municipality of Ouder-Amstel, such reimbursement for an A-trajectory runs through the pool, with amounts of €675.00 or €710.00 for two years and €295.00 for one year (rules Youth Fund Ouder-Amstel). For you, that means a filled seat that otherwise would have remained empty.

Why this matters: the difference between income groups

The Mulier Institute shows how large that difference is. In the lowest income group, 33 percent of children aged 6 to 12 have no swimming diploma at all, versus 5 percent in the highest group. Across all groups, it concerns 14 percent of children, about four per class of thirty (Mulier Institute, figures 2024).

Costs as a barrier, not only in the Netherlands

In Australia, nearly half of parents, 45 percent, named costs as a barrier to putting their child in swimming lessons. In the United States, 79 percent of children from families with an income under $50,000 had little to no swimming ability (BMC Public Health, 2026). Worldwide, about 236,000 people drown annually, and children under 15 bear nearly half of that burden (WHO, drowning). Price and safety are therefore closer than they seem on a price list.

Communicating your rates without discussion at reception

Put your rates in one place, with everything included

One page that states what a lesson costs, what is included, what costs extra, and how cancellation works. Think of lesson time, the diploma, making up missed lessons, registration fees, diploma costs, and swimwear. Everything not on that page becomes an email question or a conversation at reception, and those are hours you don’t spend teaching.

Explain a price increase before the bill arrives

Announce an increase at least a month in advance and explain where it comes from: pool rental, wages, insurance. Parents accept a €3 per month increase more easily if they know the reason than a €1 increase that seems to come out of nowhere. Refer to the rate page of your municipality or pool, so it’s no longer an opinion but a fact.

As a parent: what to watch for when comparing rates

Convert the rate to a price per 45 minutes of lesson time, look at the group size, and check what is included in the amount. A lesson of €8 with twelve children can be more expensive per hour of lesson time than a lesson of €19 with five children. And VAT? That’s a question for your accountant

Education is basically exempt from VAT, but whether your lessons fall under that depends on how you offer them (Dutch Tax Authority, exemption in education). Don’t include this yourself in your rate list before you have calculated it, and consult an accountant experienced with education or sports.

A rate that works starts with your own cost price per lesson, not the sign of the school down the street. Calculate pool rental, wages, materials, and administration, then choose a model that makes your income predictable and tell parents exactly what is included in the amount.
