The Shortage in Numbers

Employers' association WiZZ, Employers in Swimming Pools and Swim Schools, has been warning for years about a structural shortage. According to the association, there are about 1100 vacancies per year, mainly for swimming instructors and supervisors. The shortage puts the continuity of swimming lessons under pressure: pools risk canceling lessons, limiting visitor numbers, or adjusting opening hours. Teaching Is Only Half the Job

The Training to Become a Swimming Instructor: Lesgever Zwem-ABC

In the Netherlands, there is one route that is the national standard: the Lesgever Zwem-ABC training, officially certifiable unit 3 (CE3) of the Allround Swimming Pool Employee vocational training. The National Council for Swimming Safety (NRZ) monitors the quality of the training and issues the industry certificate. Only with that certificate are you allowed to give swimming lessons independently.

What You Learn

The training focuses on two competencies: providing swimming lessons and developing and evaluating a series of lessons. The end goal goes beyond a diploma. Students must ultimately meet the National Swimming Safety Standard, which extends beyond swimming in a pool.

The Requirements: First Aid, Swimming Rescue, and Diploma C

Before you can take the exam, you must show several certificates: a valid first aid diploma or certificate, the Swimming Rescue certificate for pools, and your own swimming diploma C. The Swimming Rescue certificate may be no older than five years. Those who do not yet have these papers can usually obtain them separately from the training.

Where and How to Take the Training?

You can take the training at a ROC as part of mbo education, often in a BBL trajectory: you work at a recognized swim lesson provider and combine that with school. Some ROCs require a work contract of twenty to twenty-four hours per week for this, such as the Albeda Sportcollege. Additionally, private institutes affiliated with the NRZ offer cursory trajectories. These are often more compact and suitable for career switchers.

Salary and Employment Conditions in 2026

Swimming instructors fall under the collective labor agreement (cao) for Swimming Pools and Swim Schools, which runs from October 1, 2024, to December 31, 2026, and has been declared generally binding. The current tables are on the WiZZ cao page.

The Salary Table as of July 1, 2026

The table below shows the starting amounts per scale for a 38-hour workweek, from the salary table for skilled workers as of July 1, 2026.

The median of the nine starting amounts is €2,775 per month. Many swimming instructors work part-time, often in the evenings and weekends. The hourly rate then starts around fifteen euros and increases with the scale.

What Determines Your Scale?

Your scale depends on the job group the employer assigns to your position and your experience. The collective labor agreement is a minimum agreement: employers may deviate positively but not negatively. If you disagree with your classification, you can challenge it through the job classification appeals committee.

More Than Just Salary

The collective labor agreement also regulates vacation, allowances, and pension. Because pools operate in the evenings and weekends, these hours are well suited for many instructors to combine with studies or a second job.

Vacancies and Internships

Most vacancies are on werkeninhetwater.nl, WiZZ's platform, and on specialized sites like ZwemNetwerk. Young people between twelve and thirty can get acquainted with the sector for free via Next Generation Lifeguards, for example with a short training or an internship at a pool, a swim club, or a rescue brigade.

Working Independently

More and more swimming instructors work as freelancers for multiple swim schools. This gives freedom in your schedule, but you also handle your own administration, insurance, and invoicing.
